Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy’s Upper School Christian Studies teacher and 2001 alum, William Pohl, PhD, has recently written a book titled Ethical God-Talk in the Book of Job: Speaking to the Almighty.
The project began as Dr. Pohl’s dissertation that was finished in 2016 at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) under Dr. Dennis Magary, Dr. Eric Tully, and Dr. Richard Averbeck. Dr. Pohl’s fascination with Job began in a Hebrew readings course with Dr. Magary. While reading Job’s bold, even visceral speeches about God and to God, Pohl decided he had to figure the difficult book out (to whatever degree that was possible).
Dr. Pohl studied the ethics of speech to God and about God as conveyed in the book of Job. His monograph shows how the book of Job has a timely message for faith communities now because the book of Job encourages readers to lament—that lament is ethical speech in the context of (innocent) suffering. In the midst of a difficult and uncertain season, the lament tradition found throughout the scripture provides readers with the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax for their own prayer life as they call out to God in the midst of our trials.
“The book discusses what the book of Job teaches us as readers about ethical speech, highlighting for us the importance of lament in the midst of our trials,” shares Dr. Pohl. “It is a timely message, and people may find they now have the time to read more!”
Ethical God was published by Bloomsbury T&T Clark in the prestigious Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Series. It was just released on 04/16/20 and can be purchased on Bloomsbury or Amazon. Congratulations to Dr. Pohl!
