CHCA started a new tradition this year with the “Express Yourself” poetry competition. The goal was to celebrate the diversity of talent that exists among the student body.
Students in Grades 4-12 were invited to submit up to two original and unpublished poems for consideration. Led by Director of Diversity & Belonging Dr. Jeremy Flowers, the team of judges, read an impressive 127 submissions! The following students were selected as the winners:
Division A (Grades 4-6)
1st place – “Quarantine” by Grant Wilmer Gr 5
2nd place – “The World is Loud” by Payton Huffstetler Gr 5
3rd place – “Haiku” by Mia Hamilton Gr 6
Division B (Grades 7-8)
1st place – “If You Don’t See My Blackness…” by Joi Burton Gr 8
2nd place – “The Simple Things” by Kelsey Espenshade Gr 7
3rd place – “Unity” by Kelsey Espenshade Gr 7
Division C (Grades 9-12)
1st place – “Blithe Heart” by Jaden Allen Gr 11
2nd place – “Black Girl” by Kiylah Smoot Gr 11
3rd place – “Haded” by Madeline Northup Gr 12
