Beak Squad Robotics - UE 5-6

Grade Levels: Gr 5-6 - Competitive team
Purpose: Upper E Beak Squad Robotics strives to provide our students with tangible, innovative, and unique opportunities to support their interests and develop their skills. Students will work with VEX IQ Robotics to address real-world problems, utilize the Engineering Design Process to build a robot from scratch, and compete locally.  Competitions are for Gr 5-6 team(s).
Months: Late August - December/January: Gr 5-6 competition season
January - May(tentative): Gr 5-6 competition advancement if qualify
June - July: Gr 4-6 Summer Camps
Practice Schedule:

Gr 5-6: Tuesdays and Thursdays - 3:15-4:15 p.m.; meeting times may be extended close to competition date

Practice Calendar
2021-2022

  • Additional practice dates may be required to prepare for competitions.
  • All robotics team members should bring their own water bottle to practices. No other drink besides water.
  • If you MUST miss a practice, notify Ms. Hardy. Multiple absences may jeopardize your ability to attend competition even if they are prearranged and excused.
Practice Location: Founders' Campus - Robotics Classroom (W-121)
Gr 5-6 
Competition Schedule:
Students compete in the local qualifying tournament (date: TBA late November - early January)
Additional competitions dependent on team success will be announced.
Cost: Gr 5-6: $250 (cover team(s) registration and competition fees, weekly practice snacks, supplies, T-Shirt, food for competition day(s), and end of year celebration party)
Anticipated # of Students: Gr 5-6: Up to 14 students divided between 2 mixed grade teams
Expected Parent Involvement:
  • Pick up students at ending time at UE entrance or students will be sent to After School Care and a fee will be charged.
  • 2 volunteers needed for safety and supervision at Gr 5-6 competitions.
Notes:

  • While we have high expectations for behavior, teamwork, and dedication, team practices will be fun, engaging, and productive. Students should not overcommit themselves.  Missing practices for other team or club activities is unacceptable and will negatively impact the student and their team.
  • Upper E Beak Squad Robotics is not well suited to students seeking free build or makerspace type activities.

How to Register:

Note: You must be invited to register via receipt of a  Session Password to complete these steps.

This process has been intentionally developed to allow students and parents a realistic glimpse of UE robotics. We encourage interested students to follow the process for their grade level described below. Pay special attention to deadlines. By the conclusion two weeks' of practices, we hope students and parents understand the time commitment, overall expectations, and mindset of Upper E Beak Squad Robotics.

Becoming a member is a multi-step process:

  1. Student submits completed paper application to Ms. Hardy (late submissions not accepted). Student and parent portions required.
  2. Student attends the first 4 practices where coaches complete observations.
  3. Ms. Hardy emails session password to invited team members so parents can register.
  4. Online Registration using session password.
Gr 5-6 Important Dates: 08/23/21 - Applications available for interested students from Ms. Hardy
08/30/21 - Student applications due to Ms. Hardy
08/31/21 - Practice begins (must have submitted application)
09/10/21 @ 8:00 p.m. - Registration opens (session password emailed to parents)
09/13/21 @ 11:59 p.m. - Registration closes; unregistered students will be taken to After School Care and a fee will be charged
