Counselor's Corner

Counselor’s Corner: A Turning of the Tide?

Having worked with students and young people for over twenty years now, I know there are many challenges that come with every generation as young people figure out who they are, where they fit, and how they exert their own independence and authority. However one huge difference that has taken place since around 2010 is the burgeoning role that technology (and specifically smart phones) has played in the development of our young people—for better and for worse. This is something I have written about in many of these Counselor’s Corners in the past as I honestly see it as the number one issue facing our young people today. In light of that, I am excited to see the growing momentum as we work together as a society to fix this, most recently highlighted by a new book released by psychologist Jonathan Haidt: The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

In the two weeks since its release, I have seen this information referred to herehereherehere, and in a much more bite-sized version here. If podcasts are more your thing, you can also find it here and here. My prayer is that this, on the heels of Childhood 2.0Wait Until 8th, and Protect Young Eyes, will continue to usher a groundswell of parents who would be willing to make the four commitments that Haidt advocates for:

1. No smartphones until high school.

2. No social media until age sixteen.

3. Phone-free schools.

4. More independence, responsibility, and free-play in real-world childhood.

I could not agree more, and I hope that as followers of Christ, we can pave the way by “not conforming to the pattern of this world” (Romans 12:2) and by creating a developmentally healthy childhood for our young people by uniting together to combat these challenges!
