Beak Squad Robotics - FRC Grades 9-12

Grade Levels: 9 - 12
Purpose: We compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a worldwide organization of 4000+ active high school robotics teams. Every January we get a brand new challenge and have 2 months to design, build, and program a 120 lbs robot to play a game in 3 v. 3 matches on a big field. Dubbed “a varsity sport for the mind” FRC combines difficult technical challenges with the excitement of competition to inspire students in STEM pursuits.

Months: May-December: Training

January-April: Build and competition season

Fall: Official FRC season event registration
January - February: the six-week robot design and build period with robot shipment deadline in late February
March - April: Regional and Championship events for qualifying teams
Mid April - early May: World Championship events for qualifying teams
Summer: we may compete in optional summer competitions and strongly encourage our Gr 9-12 students to help with robotics summer camp

Practice Schedule: Off-season (summer and fall): Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

During build season: Monday-Thursday 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. + Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Practice Location: Robotics Team Workshop (within 1 mile of campus)

Meet / Competition Info: We typically compete in 2 regional tournaments in March - April, culminating at the FIRST Championship. Often these events involve overnight travel and can involve missing a few days of school. We also compete in 1-2 off-season tournaments.

  • Each team member pays a $250 participation fee and agrees to provide meals during the build season
  • All students receive a Tshirt. Additional team items (hats, jackets, etc.) may be available for purchase.
  • Travel to tournaments requires an overnight stay and has an additional travel fee to cover transportation and lodging expenses for the student. These are communicated well in advance.
  • Scholarship opportunities are available; contact the coaches for details.
  • Each year the team must raise about $50,000 to cover basic costs so additional fundraising is essential. Funds are raised through Corporate Sponsorships and donations. Want to help? Contact Andy Ciarniello.
