Beak Squad Robotics - FLL Grades 4-7

Grade Levels: 4-7 (Gr 7 students can also join the Beak Squad Robotics - FTC Gr 7-8 team)
Purpose: Introduce students to a real-world engineering challenges in a unique team setting to learn collaboration and problem solving as well as design and programming skills. Student teams research a real-world problem related to the annual theme and are challenged to develop and present a creative solution. They design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS®, and compete on a table-top playing field.


June-July: Pre-season* Optional summer camps are available
Late August - December: Competition season
January - February: Post-season

*Like athletics, students who regularly attend pre-season training will be better equipped to play significant roles during competition season.

Practice Schedule:

Competition season: Meetings are 3 times a week Monday - Friday; 90 minutes TBD between 3:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

  • Specific dates and times will be determined by parent coaches and team.
  • Research and presentation work completed at home in addition to meeting times.
  • Additional practice time will be required to prepare for competitions.
  • *Students must be supervised at all times. Parents may enroll them in the After School Program (fee based) or organize and staff a study room should their child need to stay at school before practice begins.

Practice Location:

Founders' Campus and other sites determined by team coaches

Competition Schedule: Local competition is held one weekend in November or December.
District competition for qualifying teams are in January.

Cost: $150
Anticipated # of Students: 32 - Each grade 4-7 team has 5-8 students and 2 parent coaches

Expected Parent Involvement: Parent/mentor support is needed to ensure success and we MUST have parent leaders for each team. The CHCA faculty contact and an experienced FLL coach will mentor and support our parent coaches. No previous experience is needed!

  • Competition team members are expected to participate in all aspects of the program

How Do You Register: Registration is a two-step process:
  1. Register with CHCA You will be given a link in your confirmation email to use for step 2.
  2. Register with First so that organization knows about you.
