One of the keys to a successful high school experience is appropriate curriculum selection and placement. A student’s course selections involve an ongoing partnership between counselors, teachers, parents and students, and placement is based upon the student’s individual interests, abilities and demonstrated achievement in coursework. With everyone working together, this process ensures a solid academic foundation in preparation for the competitive college admissions process.
Each schedule is individually developed after careful consideration of the student’s online selections, elective priorities, requirements for graduation, teacher recommendations and the need for each student to have a well-rounded academic profile for college applications. In mid-February, counselors meet with all students to instruct them on selection of course options. Each student receives a list of their teachers’ recommendations for next year’s course placement, which they use to select their course preferences online. (Parents can review this list of course suggestions and their child’s course preferences online from home.) Additionally, students are asked to complete a course option sheet which includes a prioritized list of four elective classes. Once the master schedule has been completed in the spring, each student’s bell schedule of classes is configured and is mailed home prior to summer break.
