Upper School Counseling

Where will your path take you?

Your student is uniquely gifted, and we know that students each travel a unique path in their educational experience. We also know that a well-laid foundation for that path is critical. That's why, starting in grade 7, we invite families and students to engage with us on a course that uniquely sets each student up for academic success. Once in grade 10, families will work with a dedicated counselor in order to facilitate strong relationships and individualized planning regarding the college process.

Your journey will include:

Gr 7 & 8 Parents: Counselors' Coffees

Parents have questions about the Upper School 9-12 program, and we want to provide the answers. Using a question and answer format, principals and counselors provide concise information about how the college process works, the career counseling options we offer, and what scheduling looks like once students attend the MSL Campus in grades 9-12.

Academics and Scheduling

Academics are the core of a student’s time in high school, and we have courses that appeal to all interests. Our creative faculty continuously introduce new electives to fill the eager minds of our students and answer their demands for emerging trends in education. We will work with your student each year to pick the most rigorous course schedule academically appropriate for him or her. Counselors know that a strong academic record is the easiest way for your student to have the most options available during the college process.

Rising Freshman Families: Scheduling Orientation

In this unique program, the 9th grade counselor gives an overview of the scheduling process to 8th grade families. Graduation requirements, the typical freshman schedule, and different routes to graduation are all covered.

Cincinnati Suburban College Fair

The Cincinnati Suburban College Fair is one of the most well attended fairs in our area. We partner with three premier private schools in the area to offer our students a small venue, where they can browse colleges in a setting that invites intimate conversation. The fair attracts over 190 different schools of excellent caliber.

Sophomore Parents: Counselor's Coffee

Things have changed a lot since CHCA parents applied to college, and coffees help you see what lies ahead. Typically, details for testing, the college process, and Naviance are shared and discussed. All questions and answers are posted in Naviance for those unable to attend.

Sophomore & Junior Families: Test Interpretation Night

This evening event is designed to help students and parents better understand standardized test scores. We cover differences in standardized tests, as well as help families understand the test prep options available.

Junior Families: College Planning Night

Which is more important - a high GPA or broad involvement in extra-curriculars? A panel of college admission experts share their insights regarding the college search and selection process. This general information helps guide the individual junior family meetings that occur each winter/spring with your counselor.

Junior & Senior Families: College Financial Aid 101

A financial aid professional talks families through the basics of the college financial aid process and explains the different types of aid available.

Senior Application Festivals

Sometimes students just need a designated time to work on college applications. We provide seniors with the time, space, and our expertise to get it done in a timely fashion! We schedule work sessions before, during, and after school.

Senior Parents: Counselor's Coffee

We invite senior parents to join us for an update about the college process, their students' journey to date, and general Q&A. Students are not always communicative and we want to make sure parents know all the ways we're working with their students, and how we will continue to guide them through the process.

What were you made to do?

At CHCA we want to help students use the unique traits gifted to them by God to write a path that is ideal for success. Students work individually with counselors to begin this exploration, going beyond the typical career counseling found in high schools. Using the industry gold-standard tools, we help our students discover their gifts and develop the means they need to achieve their goals. We use the Myers-Briggs personality profile along with the Strong’s Interest Inventory and the Skill Scan to help students pick a major that works with their interests, skills, and values!

Who Will Guide You on your Path?

Meet the Upper School Counseling Team. With a collective total of more than 60 years of experience, our Upper School counseling staff is fully equipped to help you navigate your college preparatory experience. We want to help each student leverage his or her unique God-given gifts, and go forward on a path that is ideal for their journey.
